Insect threat spreading across southeast Missouri - KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar Bluff

Hundreds of thousands of ash trees in Missouri are facing growing insect threat. 

The Emerald Ash Borer which has killed over 50 million ash trees across the US in the last 10 years, was recently identified in Kansas City by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and Conservation.

The insect was also found in Wayne County which is adjacent to Reynolds County, and it seems to be spreading across southeast Missouri. 

Many ash trees have been quarantined due to the insect. However, it is still extending beyond the areas.

The major cause of the insect's expansion is due to the transportation of firewood. The insect burrows itself into the wood which is transported between different cities.

Wayne County is currently under federal and state quarantines which prohibits the movement of firewood to cut down on the spread of the Borer.

Consumers are advised to buy firewood that was locally harvested by their campsite or lodging location.
