POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Semi-truck traffic in downtown Poplar Bluff is now a thing of the past.

The new industrial park bypass opened Thursday morning.

The Butler County Commission says 5th Street and Ditch Road in downtown Poplar Bluff were pounded by semi-truck traffic, but the bypass will help with that.

The new road runs between the industrial park and Highway 67. Hundreds of trucks are expected to use that easy highway access every day.

The city says the bypass will help attract new business as well.

"When manufacturers are looking to relocate, one thing they want is easy access to a four lane highway," said Steve Halter with the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce.  "Trucks used to have to drive through downtown and in residential neighborhoods.  Not anymore."

The project cost about $4 million with the money coming from a combination of local, state, and federal money.
