CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Grand Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Charleston, Mo. kicked off their first ever after school program on Sunday. The program officially begins on August 27.

Sunday, it was all about reaching out to children and parents raising awareness about the program. The program is for children needing help with after school homework.

Around 50 people enjoyed fun, games, face painting and food.

The Grand Avenue SDA After School Program is a volunteer based operation. Organizers plan to help up to about 25 kids and grow from there.

They are also accepting volunteers to help with the program.

Organizer Audrey Johnson has always wanted to have this kind of program. Johnson says she hopes to build morale with the children and parents in the community.

"If we can get them early on, kind of instill those moral values in them, responsibility and all of that," said Johnson. "If we could kind of get that in to them young then maybe those generations will start changing down the line."

The Grand Avenue SDA After School Program starts on August 27 and is on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
