BERTRAND, MO (KFVS) -

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore blames the state of the economy for causing the increase in crime in Bertrand.

"There is something very wrong here in Bertrand and something needs to be done," Brenda Pendergrass, a daughter of a recent victim, said. "When you can't feel safe in your own home, where can you feel safe?"

Pendergrass' parents, Harlan and Pansey, were sleeping in their bed, while just outside the room they were being robbed.

"Just to think we were in there asleep and didn't hear nothing," Pansey Terrell said. "Like I told my daughter, well that stuff can be replaced. But we can't, but we're so old, you probably wouldn't want to replace us anyway.

Sense of humor still is intact. But, their sense of security has been forever shaken.

"Well I told my husband, I'll be afraid to go to sleep now," Terrell said. "I'll be afraid to go to sleep."

"I just hope they catch them and no one else has to go through what my mom and dad went through," Pendergrass said.
