FREDERICKTOWN, MO (KFVS) -

It's more than just a new school year for students in Fredericktown, Missouri. They finally have a new school building after fire destroyed their middle school more than two years ago.

People in Fredericktown feel that if anything good came out of that fire, it would be their new middle school.

It has been a long time coming. The building is between the football field and the high school.

About 500 sixth, seventh and eighth graders will head back to school there next Thursday, August 16.

After the fire, the kids spent last year all split up in modular buildings.

Now they have 60,000 square feet to spread out in.

The kids are very excited," said Superintendent Kelly Burleson. "We had open house last week for the general public. Kids usually don't want to start school, but my middle schoolers are ready to start school."

The school is all paid for through insurance. it also has a FEMA safe room paid for with grant money.

"It is an absolutely wonderful facility," said Middle School Principal Scott Sikes. "It's designed for kids to learn and teachers to be able to teach. We think its going be a great asset for our community."

Two juveniles were charged with the fire that burned the middle school.

Crews are now tearing the old building down. Some members of the community tried to save it, but it just never worked out.

Tonight at ten we'll show you more of the inside of the building.

We'll also show you how they've made some pieces of the old school part of this new building.
