GARNETT, KS (KCTV) -

The intense drought is drying up corn crops, and experts say this means the price of ethanol gas will go up.

Bill Pracht, board chairman for East Kansas Agri-Energy, said the plant plans to stop production early this year.

"Because of our costs going up and the unavailability of corn in the area and outside our local area, we're going to be closing our plant as of Oct. 1," Pracht said.

The plant produces more than 40 million gallons of ethanol each year. More than 13 billion is produced for the entire U.S.

"We have to reach outside of our normal trading area to bring enough bushels in to supply the plant," he said.

Pracht is hoping weather conditions are more favorable next year.

"We're financially in very good shape and we should be able to start up next harvest providing that we have a decent year crop wise," he said.

Pracht said it's too early to know exactly how much ethanol gas will rise because of the drought.

The plant also produces 200,000 tons of the livestock feed distillers grains and 5 million pounds of corn oil each year from more than 16 million bushels of locally sourced corn.
