CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Fire crews battle an overnight hay bale blaze near New Wells.

Firefighter John Rhodes says 184 round bales caught fire just before 1:45 a.m. Saturday at a cattle farm on County Road 525 about a half a mile off Highway CC.

Fire crews couldn't do much to put out the blaze; they had to just wait for the flames to die out on their own. Rhodes said their main objective was to make sure the fire didn't spread to a nearby wooded area.

Rhodes says a fire like this is devastating because there is a shortage of hay due to the drought.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
