CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
A Cape Girardeau teen will face hate crime charges as an adult.
Mercedes Makeda Ayers, 17, faces third degree assault as a hate crime and burglary charges.
According to a probable cause statement, on July 24 the victim, Jeana Terry, says then 16-year-old Ayers yelled derogatory words at her about Terry's sexuality. The two are neighbors on South Park Street.
The statement says Ayers later came back to Terry's home uninvited, grabbed her after she opened the door and attacked by punching and kicking her.
Terry ended up with a concussion and serious damage to her face. The statement shows Terry did not hit Ayers in defense but merely covered up and blocked the blows.
