LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Changes could be coming to the liquor aisle inside grocery stores in the state of Kentucky.

Court documents say Kentucky's age-old law that prohibits grocery stores from selling things like wine and spirits is unconstitutional.

The way it stands now in Kentucky, you can only buy beer at the grocery, but you can buy items like wine glasses but nothing to put in them. That's something Tuesday's ruling would change

Despite the ruling from a federal judge, reviews are mixed in the court of public opinion.

"In my opinion, I don't think they should merge the two. I think there are too many children going to the grocery store and they are not particularly allowed in the liquor store and I think it is best to keep those separate," Tom Stout said.

"Hard liquor and stuff I buy at Liquor Barn," another shopper said.

Putting those items in the aisles inside the grocery store could mean more competition for non-grocery liquor stores.

Kroger says wine is one of the most-requested items in its Kentucky stores from customers.

With Tuesdays ruling, it means days of just beer lining these shelves could soon be a thing of the past.

The ruling also would allow convenience stores and gas stations to carry wine and liquor, but it could be some time before it happens as government agencies still need to process the ruling before the change would take place.
