TAMMS, IL (KFVS) -

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is urging Governor Pat Quinn to stop plans to close Tamms and Dwight Correctional Centers at the end of August.

Rutherford says he was in the legislature when Tamms was built and it was built for a good reason.

He says the state's correctional system is overcrowded, and Tamms offered extra space.

And, it's a home for the worst of the worst.

The treasurer says the closure is rushed, and IDOC doesn't have a plan in place for what's next.

"You don't just build a road in five or six months," said Rutherford. "You actually plan five years out. So when you look at a facility that's perfectly good, we're crowded in space, we don't have a plan. I think we ought to just stop, slow this thing down and put it together the right way."

The treasurer says closing Tamms and Dwight Correctional Centers is not  in the best interest of the overall correctional system that is already way over capacity.
