CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
Crews are in the final
stages of demolition at the Old Franklin Elementary School in Cape Girardeau.
Built in the 1920s, the
old building is coming down to make room for the new building.
Voters passed a bond issue
in 2010 to pay for the new school at the corner of Themis and North Louisiana
streets.
Faculty and staff finished
last minute preps before students arrive for class on Thursday.
The new building can house
as many as 500 students.
There are 325 kids enrolled
for this school year and the principal says she thinks everyone will enjoy the
new building.
"It's too hard to describe
in just a few words," said Principal Rhonda Dunham. "It's beautiful.
The technology is far surpassed what we thought. We are more efficient. The
learning environment and the culture of the school, it's just going to dramatically
improve."
We're told parts of the old elementary school
were incorporated into the new building.
