CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -
As students move into the SIU towers, just across the street looks more like a war zone than a college campus.
The triads, three dorms on the east end of campus, were demolished over the summer.
School officials say they were old, outdated and didn't even have sprinkler systems.
Tearing them down will make way for new, state of the art residence halls.
Chancellor Rita Cheng says losing out on all that living space will not make way for a student housing crunch.
"We planned ahead and built Wall and Grand and did some other remodeling to absorb the students that were housed in those residence halls," said Cheng. "So they were nearly empty last spring. And the last group was in Allen 3 last semester, (they) moved out and we didn't bring any students back."
The new residence halls are just in the planning phase right now.
Chancellor Cheng says the university hopes to break ground as soon as possible though, to get those new dorms ready for fall 2015.
