CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A new health report out Thursday said the percentage of teens engaging in oral sex has increased in recent years.

Some researchers think it's because teens view less risk with oral sex than with intercourse.

But health experts want them to know that's not the case.

The study said despite a decline in teenagers engaging in intercourse, and an increase in condom use, the rate of STDs has not decreased.

It said in 2010, about 50 percent of STDS occurred in people 15 to 24-years-old.

Lindsay Craft, the coordinator at the Cape Girardeau County STD Clinic, said teens come in saying they don't consider oral sex, as having sex.

"I think that they're thinking I'm having oral sex, it's not considered sex I'm not going to get anything, but it's definitely false, we've had our fair share of kids in here that have been positive and they're very surprised by that," said Craft.

She stresses the importance of getting tested.

"If you don't get tested, there's no way of knowing, if you don't get tested you don't know, so you can spread it to other people, which is not a good thing to give to somebody else, so it is very important," said Craft.

She said a lot of time teens don't want to tell their parents they want to get tested for STDs.

"I stress and stress, just because you don't have any symptoms, doesn't mean you don't have anything, just because you don't think it's going to happen to you, doesn't mean it's not going to happen, because it will," said Craft. "It doesn't matter what kind of sex you have, you have that chance of contracting a STD, just by having oral sex does not mean you're not at risk you're at the same risk, you can still get Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, they're out there, they're in cape county, we see it a lot," said Craft.

Craft said if an STD goes un-treated in women, some can cause problems when trying to have children.

Experts suggest sexual education should treat oral sex, the same as intercourse.

Dr. Mike Cowan, the principal at Cape Central High School said their health curriculum is an abstinence based program. He said they teach the only completely "safe sex," is no sex.

Craft said they test for STDs at the health clinic.
