VIENNA, IL (KFVS) - The sewage controversy swirling in Vienna is finally being scraped away.
The problem began just over three weeks ago when the engineering company contracted buy the city to build it's new waste water reclamation facility, spread sludge material from the old sewage lagoon.
The material was spread within 100 feet of a residential neighborhood, and a city park. And it was on the Sewage Department's property.
But, the smell was too much for residents living on Circle Drive and they began complaining about the stench in the air.
The residents, city leaders and representatives withClareda and Ziegler Engineering met last week to discuss what would be done about the sewage laden material.
The soil samples taken in the area returned a positive result for sewage material in three of the four samples.
On Wednesday evening the Vienna City Council voted to have the contaminated soil removed from the area.
That work began on Thursday morning.
"We came to an agreement that they would come back in and they'd remove all the dirt here, and all the residue," said Margaret Cole who spearheaded the effort among residents to get the mess cleaned up. " And they've agreed to take it down at least a foot to the clay and haul it all on out of here. That's what we have all asked for in the neighborhood. And I think the community kids are safe it they come out here to play, as long as this gets done."
The company will remove all the contaminated soil in over the next several days. And then spread it on another section of the Sewage Department's property away from homes and the city park.
