CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
A missing swimmer on the Mississippi River overnight prompts a quick response to what authorities feared would lead to disaster, but ended with two arrests.
Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, a report was called in of a man missing after taking an early morning swim in the Mississippi River.
"We got information he had been missing for 45 minutes," said Cape Girardeau Fire Department Captain Dean Lynn.
Search crews say the two men were from Arizona in town visiting friends and decided to take a swim in the river. When one man disappeared, another called 911.
Cape Girardeau firefighters launched two boats to begin a search, but not long after boats were on the water, the missing swimmer walked up to the search scene at the river wall on Water Street.
Authorities say the early-morning swim was not a good idea and warn people not to attempt to swim in the river.
"Even when it's at low levels like it is now, it's still an issue. Being dark and cool this morning, it can be a real problem." Lynn said. "Thank God no one got hurt."
The formerly missing swimmer appeared to have cuts on his arms and shoulder. The men told Heartland News they were cold, but otherwise okay.
Cape Girardeau Police lead the men away in handcuffs shortly after 4 a.m. Officers say the pair is under arrest for violating a park curfew.
