Butler Co. Republicans disinvite Akin from Reagan Days

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Yet another GOP group is sending Republican senate candidate Todd Akin a strong message after his remarks about "legitimate rape."

The Butler County Republican Central Committee says they disinvited Akin from their upcoming Reagan Days event scheduled for September 8 in Poplar Bluff.

Butler County GOP Chairman Eddy Justice says having Akin at the event will be a distraction for other candidates.

During Tuesday's meeting, the committee voted unanimously to disinvite Akin and released this statement:

"This request is a result of the comments made by the Congressman regarding sexual assault and the distraction that the current situation surrounding the Congressman would cause. As a committee, we follow the lead of Senator Roy Blunt, former Senators Danforth, Bond, and Ashcroft in calling for Congressman Akin to step aside for the good of the very ideals that he is attempting to champion."

Justice also said the message being sent by super PACs and the National Republican Senatorial Committee should convince Akin to step down.

To do so, he will need a court order.
