PULASKI COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -
The body of a missing boater was found Wednesday night in the Mississippi River in Hickman County.
Ballard County Emergency Management Agency Director Anita Bugg says the body of 43-year-old Robert Goins of Villa Ridge was found Wednesday night in Hickman County in the Mississippi River.
Hickman County Coroner Paula Boaz says the body was spotted by some barge workers around 11 p.m. Wednesday. The body was recovered shortly after that.
Boaz says the body is being sent to Louisville for an autopsy. The preliminary cause of death is drowning. No foul play is suspected.
The search began Sunday evening after a call to the sheriff's department about a boat on the water with no one in it.
The boat was found in a bend in the river between Olmstead and Mound City around 7:30 Sunday night. Bugg says the boat's motor was still running when crews found it.
A woman at the scene who identified herself as the missing boater's mother tells Heartland News her son went on the water with two friends. She said her son apparently dropped the friends off and went back out on the river and hasn't been seen since.
Bugg says the low water levels on the river were both a help and a hindrance to the search.
"We try to put our boats in, in some places, it's too shallow and then other places that we really need to look it's really deep," said Bugg. "So the channel is the deepest part right now of course. You can see across the river, we have sand bars and more of those were popping up. So it kind of limits how close to the bank we can get in some areas."
