CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

SIU police are investigating after a student fell from a residence hall window early Friday morning.

University spokesman Rod Sievers says Freshman Tyler Gravitt of Matteson fell from a fourth floor window at University Hall.

The student was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and then transferred to a hospital in St. Louis. He was in ICU in Friday morning.

Sievers described the student's injuries as "serious." He said more details would be released after police finish their investigation.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Rita Cheng released the following statement to the campus community on Friday:

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

One of our students, Tyler Gravitt, is in the intensive care unit of a St. Louis hospital, and I ask that you join me in extending our support to him and his family.

Tyler, who is a freshman from Matteson, was injured in a fall early this morning from the fourth floor of University Hall. The Department of Public Safety's initial investigation indicates this was accidental.

We continue to be in close contact with Tyler's family. Please keep Tyler and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Rita Cheng
