CANALOU, MO (KFVS) -

Canalou, Missouri residents are faced with no fire department and no police station.

Mayor James Taul says the one police officer that made up for the entire force wasn't fulfilling his ten hours a week, so he was let go.

Taul says it's all part of a plan to clean up the city.

He says the fire department suffered from a lack of training and bad equipment.

If anything bad were to happen, he says the city could be held liable, so he decided to shut down the department and rely on the Matthews fire department for help.

Some residents support what the mayor is doing.

Others worry going without having both departments could cause bigger problems.

"Well, we are seven miles from Matthews so if anything happens with the fire department it takes a long time for Matthews to get there" said Karla Nabert, Canalou Alderman Board Member. "It's about a 10 minute drive no matter how fast you go , it's at least 10 minutes."

Mayor Taul says he does plan to hire a new police officer soon.

But as for the fire department, he plans on starting from scratch.

He first wants his crews to have the right tools for the job, so until that changes, the department will stay closed.
