CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A special groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for the Cape Girardeau's new wastewater treatment facility.

The site's on Southern Expressway.

Voters passed a utility bill increase to pay for the project in 2010.

According to a news release, new state regulations required the city to increase its wastewater treatment capacity.

The current plant was built in 1962 with an estimated 50 year life span. It had been operating near capacity at 7 million gallons per day.

The new facility will have an estimated 11 million gallons per day.

The increased capacity is expected to help residential growth and economic development.
