TAMMS, IL (KFVS) -

Some candles lit during a storm reportedly led to a house fire Friday night in Tamms, Illinois.

According to the Alexander County Emergency Management director, there was a house fire last night in Tamms during the storm Friday night.

It happened at 125 Second Street around 9 p.m.

Home owner Brenda Hopkins says during the storm the power went out and was dark. She then lit candles so her family could see inside.

The flames from the candles got close to the living room curtains and caught fire. The fire then spread quickly throughout the front part of the house.

Hopkins and her sister quickly ran and grabbed the 3 children in the home and were able to get out the back of the house.

She says all of her things were destroyed. Everything inside of the house has fire or smoke damage.

Hopkins and her family do have family to stay with in the area.

She urges others to pay close attention when dealing with lit candles inside a home.
