ST. LOUIS, MO (KFVS) -

On Sunday afternoon life as Meghan Herndon and her family knew it, changed in an instant.

"Got a call from Meghan's dad that she had been in an accident, " said Cindi Herndon, Meghan's mom. "My gut instinct was that something was wrong, and I was in the car in 10 minutes headed to Cape."

It all happened at the corner of Sprigg and Normal streets. Twenty-one-year-old Southeast Missouri State University senior Meg Herndon's scooter collided with a pick-up truck.

"Her injuries are described as potentially devastating, and she has multiple broken bones," said Cindi Herndon.

Meghan is in critical condition, and in a coma at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She is not alert, but is giving her family some positive signs.

"I went in there and tickled her foot, and she responded by moving it," said Ian Herndon-Meghan's Dad. "I feel confident she can feel and hear us."

Meghan's parents don't blame anyone for the accident, but do want to warn others about the increased number of scooters on the roads, especially near college campuses.

"People need to be more aware that they are out there, " said Ian Herndon.

"I'm a big believer in helmets, would it have made a difference I don't know," said Cindi Herndon. "I do wish she (Meg) had been wearing one."

Meg Herndon of Fenton, Missouri is a scholar athlete who has been playing soccer since the age of four, and currently plays for Southeast.

The college senior is also a nursing student, and worked at Southeast Hospital.

Her boyfriend Justin Angle now wears Meghan's promise ring around his neck. He gave it to her two weeks ago.

Many family members and friends now wear bracelets that say, "Pray 4 Meg". It started out as a small fundraiser, and organizers have now sold hundreds. Email pray4meg@gmail.com to order bracelets. Proceeds will help pay for Meg's medical expenses.

"All we can do now is hope and pray," said Meghan's dad.

Ian Herndon says the unknown is the most difficult thing right now, but says the support from people not only here in the Heartland but from around the world has helped.

"We have people reaching out from Japan, Pakistan and so many places it's amazing," said Ian Herndon.

"There is no way we could ever thank everyone," said Cindi Herndon.
