MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -
It was a big day in Murphysboro as thousands showed up for the 61st Annual Apple Festival.
Saturday marked the grand opening of the event, which included a parade, apple-themed contests, rides and games.
Residents told us they put their chairs out days in advance to make sure they had a view of parade as it went through downtown.
It's a tradition for many in and around Murphysboro.
Verna Caplinger says she has seen all of the 61 Apple Festivals in her hometown.
"Oh I used to have kids in and do different things," said Caplinger. "I had a baton twirler and a queen contest and stuff."
Something that Caplinger continues to notice year after year is the bigger crowds bringing in more new visitors.
"My favorite part of the parade is spending time with my dad and getting all these suckers," said one youngster.
This year's festival wrapped up on Saturday evening.
