More than 200 volunteers build $90,000 playground in 1 day

More than 200 volunteers built a new playground for the tornado-stricken Gaskin City neighborhood of Harrisburg.

The playground is only a couple blocks from where an F4 tornado killed eight people on February 29, 2012.

Earlier this year, children from the local area drew 25 drawings of what they wanted for a playground.

Leaders from several different organizations prepared the materials for the playground and had the wood cut and dug holes, according to Ron Emery, executive director of the Harrisburg Township Park District.

The volunteers gathered Saturday morning and finished the playground in five hours.

The project is a joint partnership between KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization owned by Disney that aids in to help build play spaces, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Southern Illinois Community Foundation and Harrisburg Township Park District, and many more who helped out to build the playground.

The total cost for the playground is $90,000. Eight-five percent of the cost is funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and the other 15 percent is coming from a plethora of organizations, businesses and other people.
