KIRKWOOD, MO (KFVS) - Rep. Todd Akin has one more day to drop out of the Missouri Senate race, but he says he's not going anywhere.

Akin appeared at a fundraiser with former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in Kirkwood Monday.  While many Republicans have distanced themselves from Akin due to his comments about "legitimate rape," Gingrich is sticking with him.

Gingrich says the polls show Akin is still within reach of the Senate seat, and believes other Republicans will return to supporting him by mid-October.

Akin could soon get a boost if a conservative fund chooses to support him.

The Senate Conservatives Fund had previously distanced themselves from Akin, but since he could still beat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, they are now considering supporting him.

Akin has repeatedly apologized for the remarks he made last month, where he spoke about women's bodies being able to thwart pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."
