Man accused of stealing school bus in Pope County

Posted: Updated:

The Pope County Sheriff says a man has been arrested after stealing a school bus.

Delbert Sisco, Jr., 42, of Golconda, turned himself into the Pope County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday.  He was arrested on charges of theft (felony) and possession of a stolen vehicle (felony).

He was taken to the Massac County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Sheriff Jerry Suits says Sisco went to the garage of the Pope County School District early Monday morning and took Bus #7 out.

Suits sent out a statewide dispatch for Illinois and Kentucky state police agencies and other local officers in the surrounding area.

Around 8 a.m. Monday, an Illinois trooper saw the bus at Exit 7 off of Interstate 24 in Johnson County.  Suits says the bus was completely out of gas and abandoned.  ISP checked and obtained evidence about who was suspected in the bus theft.

Suits says a warrant for Sisco's arrest was issued.

Suits also said that there was some minor damage to the bus and it's back into the hands of the school district.  The school district plans on servicing the bus before it's put back on the road.
