If you did not have the opportunity to see former Secretary of State General Colin Powell at the Show Me Center last week, you don't know what you missed. It was an exciting evening in which many local folks were exposed to the personal side of a man who, just a few short years ago, was one of the leaders of the free world.
It was an opportunity afforded to the people here in the Heartland by the students and administration of Southeast Missouri State University. I've long known the benefits of living near a university. There is a special air in a "college town". Universities help to make athletic, cultural, and educational opportunities available to the masses while also providing them to their students. Opportunities that far too few of us take advantage of.
We are blessed to have many fine universities throughout our viewing area but I want to take this opportunity to brag on Southeast and especially the speaker series. Few public universities dedicate the resources to have a speaker series as robust as Southeast's. That was apparent in the crowd. I marveled at the pride of the people in attendance when they spoke of the long list of revered speakers that have graced the stage here in Southeast Missouri.
If you missed General Powell, you missed a wonderful evening. But there are many other speakers and many other events left to come this academic year. Don't let the opportunity to be engaged pass you by.
