MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The county coroner's office says a man shot by a McCracken County sheriff's deputy in early October has died.

Michael Lakin passed away today at 12:38 p.m. Saturday at the Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, according to Ben Bradford, Deputy with the McCracken County Coroners Office.

Bradford says an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday morning in Louisville. Results on the cause of death won't be known for three to four weeks. .

According to Kentucky State Police, the shooting happened October 6 at a home on Oriole Lane.

KSP investigators say Deputy Jared Rivera originally responded to the home to investigate a reported suicide attempt, but no one answered when he knocked on the door.

According to McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden, Rivera made his way back to his police cruiser. On the way, a person who was riding along in his squad car warned Rivera that a man with a gun was tapping on the front window from inside the home.

Rivera got in his squad car and tried to reverse a safer distance and take cover. Investigators say the man, later identified as 50-year-old Michael Lakin, came out of the front door and began moving toward the vehicle waving a gun and a 'Samurai' sword.

Rivera ordered Lakin to drop the weapons several times but Lakin allegedly did not comply, and continued to advance toward the deputy. At that point, the officer fired his duty rifle twice, striking Lakin in the upper torso.

KSP investigators say Lakin retreated into the home and was discovered lying near the front door. An ambulance was on standby due to the original nature of the 911 call and was able to offer immediate medical attention at the scene.

Lakin was taken to local hospital.

Kentucky State Police had filed charges of assault 3rd degree on a police officer against Lakin.

Lakin had been arrested on marijuana charges in 2008.
