SPARTA, IL (KFVS) -

Wednesday marked a big welcome home for seven soldiers from the Illinois Army National Guard 662nd Engineer Firefighting Detachment.

The group spent seven months in Afghanistan providing emergency response services for the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wolverine.

"We feel that our mission of fire protection on the FOB was successful and we served our country well in Operation Enduring Freedom 2012," said Staff Sgt.Christopher Heiken of Mount Vernon the team leader for the 662nd.

Some members of the group are career firefighters as well and will now be returning to their everyday work of protecting their communities.
