CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Doctors are now seeing patients at a new free clinic in Cape Girardeau.

Volunteers say it has been a steady stream since day one.

Samaritan Regional Health Clinic opened on August 3. Those who saw the vision and then carried it through knew there was a need, but are still amazed at the number of people coming through the doors.

Reginald Roberson of Cape Girardeau considers himself a blessed man despite his financial situation.

"In 2009 I got laid off," said Roberson.

He remains unemployed. With no insurance, or other means he came to this clinic.

"I was one of the first ones here," said Roberson.

Since they opened two months ago, Samaritan Regional Health Clinic has stayed very busy.

"We've probably had 15-20 patients everyday we're open," said Gwen Maloney.

Maloney is a registered nurse, and now the CEO of this free clinic.

She works alongside about 20 other volunteers who believe in helping those without insurance, medicaid, or medicare.

"Some of these people haven't seen a physician in 2 years and they have chronic problems," said Maloney.

Patients like Reginald Roberson are grateful, not knowing where else they would turn.

"Especially with no unemployment, it ran out and the bills were piling up," said Roberson. "Thank the Lord for this."

The clinic is open two days a week. For now, it's staying alive thanks to donations. If grant money comes through workers would like to be open five days a week.

"There's a big need," said Maloney.

As people like Reginald Roberson now have peace of mind.

"It's marvelous, I'm telling you," said Roberson.

Samaritan Regional Health Clinic is located at 937 Broadway in Cape Girardeau.

It is open Wednesday's from 2-7 p.m., and on Friday's from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling (573) 388-4504.

The clinic is also seeking volunteers, not just from medical professionals but from those who might be able to answer phones and perform other office duties.
