CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
The mysteries of an old ship wreck discovered on the Mississippi River could soon be unlocked.
Thursday, the Army Corps of Engineers approved a permit that would allow for further exploration.
A local woman, Amy Grammer, discovered the boat in September.
Grammer, along with her husband, and a local ship wreck expert, Randy Barnhouse, now have an archeologist on board to help them out.
James Phillips, the archaeologist from Southeast Missouri State University says the boat may be an early 20th century barge that carried coal or other important goods.
The crew hopes to learn as much as possible before the river rises again and covers the ship.
