Family says Ripley man was shot to death

Posted: Updated:
RIPLEY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Police in Ripley are investigating the death of a 24-year-old father who was found dead in his own neighborhood Friday.

Family members of Courtney Johnson say his body was found early Friday morning in the grass next to his aunt's house.

"People in the neighborhood say they heard shots around 11 last night, 11:30, so we assume he'd been there all night and all day," said Johnson's cousin, Sharketha Boyd.

Johnson was the father of a 3-year-old boy.

His family says he was shot to death.

"I got here about 10 this morning and when I got here they had everything blocked off and he was laid out right there in the open," said Sharketha.

Police and TBI agents spent most of the day combing the neighborhood and interviewing neighbors.

Cordarious Boyd was Courtney Johnson's cousin and his best friend. He has no idea who would do something like this.

"As far as a gang member, selling dope or anything like that, it wasn't nothing like that," said Cordarious.

Family members say Courtney was always with his family. Now, his 3-year-old boy has to grow up without a father.

Ripley police are being tight lipped about this case.

Meanwhile, Courtney Johnson's family wants answers. So far, no arrests have been made.
