"Potential" can be a dangerous word, especially when it is used in the past tense. Too often we find ourselves shaking our heads and bemoaning the fact that someone or some organization fell far short of a goal because of a simple lack of execution. You never want to be that guy who "had potential".

When I first arrived here in Cape a few months ago that "potential" word was used in the past tense often when someone described the downtown area, particularly the Broadway corridor. It's no secret, a shift of retail from downtowns all across America in decades past was obviously felt here in Cape too. There are buildings on Broadway that have been closed for years. Some for decades. But now, thanks to both public and private investment, Broadway has put on her best new dress and is ready to roll out the red carpet for all to see.

Tax dollars, infused with grant money, private investment, and the good old sweat equity of business owners and shop keepers along the street are paying off for an area that definitely "has potential". This Friday, Mayor Harry Rediger will officially declare Broadway back open for business. If you haven't been to Downtown Cape in a while, you really need to come see for yourself. It has the "potential" to be terrific.
