Southeast Missouri was picked second in the West Division of the 2012-13 Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced during its annual media day Tuesday.
This year marks the first for divisional play in the OVC, which now includes 12 teams for the first time in league history.
Murray State led the West Division voting, picking up 22 of a possible 24 first-place votes and 132 total points. Southeast followed, earning the remaining two first-place votes and 108 points. Austin Peay (92 pts.), SIU Edwardsville (73 pts.), Eastern Illinois (49 pts.) and UT Martin (38 pts.) completed the West.
Meanwhile, Belmont garnered 21 of 24 first-place nods and 131 points as the preseason-favorite in the East Division. Tennessee State, who received three first-place votes, was second with 109 points. Tennessee Tech (87 pts.), Morehead State (77 pts.) and Eastern Kentucky (56 pts.) rounded out the East. Due to an NCAA APR penalty, Jacksonville State is ineligible for the OVC and NCAA Tournaments this season and was not included in the preseason voting.
Southeast, which enters its fourth season under head coach Dickey Nutt, had two players garner Preseason All-Conference accolades in 2012-13.
Junior forward Tyler Stone averaged 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in his first season with the Redhawks after transferring from Missouri. Those numbers earned Stone Second-Team All-OVC and All-Newcomer honors a year ago. He scored double figures in all but two of his starts, turned in six double-doubles and was named OVC Newcomer of the Week a league-high six times, as well.
Senior Marland Smith joined Stone on this year's Preseason All-OVC Team.
Smith enters his final season at Southeast ranked 16th all-time on the school's career scoring list with 1,089 points. He averaged 12.3 points per game and led the team with 63 three-point field goals made. Smith's 188 career three-pointers made presently rank third at Southeast.
Southeast, Belmont, Murray State and Tennessee State each had two players earn preseason honors.
Murray State guard Isaiah Canaan was tabbed the OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Canaan was a First-Team All-American and the league's Player of the Year in 2011-12.
