The last time the folks in Jackson had a tax increase for parks and recreation was back in 1948.

Now some in the city want to change that.

When Jackson voters head to the polls on Nov. 6, a sales tax increase will be on the ballot.

The people behind the proposal say if it passes, it will add about six cents to a $25 meal.

All of the money will go toward supporting a donated 26,000 square foot community center in town.

Another group will front $5 million to get the project off the ground.

"We just wanted to do something that would improve the quality of life here in town," said Steve Elefson, president of Southeast Missouri Medical Center, Inc. "2006, we adopted the goal of building debt-free and donating to the city of Jackson a community center."

A portion of the money may also help to build the city a new swimming pool.
