CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The American Red Cross is sending more volunteers and equipment to aid in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Red Cross officials say the local response from the Greater St. Louis Region is:

-An additional 15 volunteers to aid in the relief efforts along the East Coast.

That brings the total number from the Greater St. Louis Region to 29.

All of today's deployments 15 of the 29 are heading to New York and New Jersey.

"As roads and airports re-open and people are able to travel again, we are moving in additional disaster workers, vehicles and relief supplies," said Cindy Erickson, Regional CEO of the Red Cross. "We're so proud that more of our amazing, local volunteers are able to travel at a moment's notice, to take care of those in need."

Volunteers Dick & Carole Daesch of Carbondale were en-route to their disaster destination in Princess Anne, Maryland.

The couple left the Heartland over the weekend and waited out the storm in Baltimore.

"A lot has been waiting for the storm to pass and determine where the needs are to the people," said Carole."That has now been determined and our vehicles are going to those places that are not yet re-connected with power."

The Daeschs' were expected to assist with transportation, working in shelters, providing meals and helping in mental health and staff health.

According to the American Red Cross, two volunteers from Carbondale were sent last week to the East Coast driving one of the St. Louis region's emergency response vehicles. They were expected to be stationed in Delaware.

Across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the Red Cross says they had 100 emergency response vehicles on alert.

The Southeast Chapter were also sending volunteers. One is already there and others were to arrive once flights could be made.
