MISSOURI AND ILLINOIS (KFVS) -
As the temperature drops, heating costs can rise, and for qualified Illinois and Missouri residents financial help is available.
In Illinois, the Shawnee Development Council has approximately $2 million to distribute through the low income heating and energy assistance program.
Despite the allotment of funds, program manager Quintilla Batiste said not enough people have signed up for help.
"The money is available," Batiste said. "We just want people to come in and apply."
Applicants must provide a photo I.D., social security card, income verification and their most recent bill.
To find out more about eligibility contact your local Shawnee Development Council office.
Missouri's low income home energy assistance program is also extending a warm hand to those in need.
In addition to bill-pay assistance the program offers wood stoves, furnace repairs and emergency service blankets.
Help is available to Missourians with less than $3,000 in a bank account, retirement account or investments.
Specific income guidelines must also be met.
For information on qualifications contact your local Department of Social Services.
