The recent drop in temperatures was my first realization that Fall is winding down and Winter is just around the corner. You can see that realization coming to life now in the aisles of most any local discount store. Space heaters are jumping off the shelves. It happens every year. And every year, usually when temperatures fall below freezing, we begin a cycle of reporting on fatal house fires started by space heaters.

I know for many, space heaters are the best option we have to keep our families warm during cold weather. There is nothing wrong with using a space heater, but using one improperly can be fatal. House fires caused by improper use of space heaters are absolutely preventable if we follow some simple safety precautions.

If you're using a space heater, keep it at least 3 feet away from anything that could burn and don't leave it on when you are sleeping. Don't use extension cords unless you have to, and if you have to, use a heavy duty one. And finally, please make sure that you have a working smoke detector in every room where a space heater is in use.

Following some simple safety tips will help keep your family safe this winter and hopefully give us fewer fires to report on.
