Inmate shoots self in hospital emergency room

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINSVILLE, KY (KFVS) -

Kentucky State Police are investigating the shooting death of a Christian County Detention Center inmate.

It happened just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday. KSP Investigators say they were called to Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville after a patient at the emergency room shot himself.

Troopers say 40-year-old Jeffery Downs, the patient and an inmate at the Christian County Jail, had been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

As Doctors treated Downs, he disarmed the jailer who's brought him to the E. R.

Moments later, troopers say he turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger.

Downs died a short time later.

No one else in the emergency room was injured.

Downs was in jail for violating parole.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
