UNION CITY, TN (KFVS) -

Volunteers with the Northwest Tennessee Disaster Services were on Staten Island in New York helping firsthand victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Northwest Tennessee Disaster Services is based out of Union City.

According to Volunteer Scott McKinney, NTDS are in New York as well as the Salvation Army, Red Cross and various church organizations.

McKinney says NTDS operates on local donations to fund their relief operations.

They saw devastation throughout the island firsthand.

McKinney says the people in New York were amazed that the group came from Tennessee to help them.

The group from Tennessee was handing out cleaning supplies, water and food.

Some volunteers were still in New York on Sunday offering their services.
