SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

More and more students in the Sikeston School District are in need.

Backpacks for Fridays, a child feeding program, is short on funds. Without the community's help, students are going home hungry.

Seventy-five students use the program within the district, but teachers say there are at least 40 others on a waiting list.

A number school officials say is too high.

To help, the community can adopt a backpack and feed a student for an entire school year for $280.

Community members may also donate monthly.

Despite the shortage in funds, the children are still being supplied with food at the end of each week.

But no students have been added to the list and there is only enough food to last through the end of the school year.

Contact the Southeast Missouri Food Bank for more information.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
