Jackson County Board cracks down on employees

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - There are computers in virtually every office inside the Jackson County Courthouse and other county offices.

But, that doesn't mean that the county employees can do whatever they want to on the computer or for however long they want.

"It was brought to my attention that there was an issue with possible computers being used on social networking sites," said Chairman John Evans of the Jackson County Board. "So I asked our IT for a report."

Evans says that report showed that there were some county employees in some county offices spending upwards of six hours or more on social networking sites while on the county's clock.

"It was brought before the legislative committee and the legislative committee in turn voted to limit it to 75 minutes," said Chairman Evans.

Which means that county employees can now only go onto social networking sites on county computers during their lunch breaks and their two 15 minute breaks daily.

"And this was done to ensure that the taxpayers dollars are being spent efficiently," said Evans. "And that people aren't abusing what the taxpayers expect out of them."

This may just be the first step in regulating where county employees can go on the internet during county business hours.

"I think this 75 minutes will be the first step to see how efficient it is. And it could go even farther," said Evans. "The taxpayers know it costs a lot to run the county. And I think the taxpayers think they ought to be getting their dollars worth for what they're paying. And that's what the county board thinks as well."
