Mo. Gov. Nixon wins re-election over Spence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon based his re-election campaign on the assertion that Missouri is "moving forward" under his leadership. His successful message means that Nixon can stay put in the governor's mansion.

Nixon turned back a challenge Tuesday from Republican businessman Dave Spence, who had described Missouri's economy as lagging behind that of its neighbors.

Nixon's victory makes him the first Missouri governor to win re-election since Democrat Mel Carnahan in 1996.

Nixon ran a centrist campaign that highlighting budget cuts and tax cuts enacted in cooperation with a Republican-led Legislature. He traveled to scores of ribbon cuttings, ground breakings and business expansions over the past couple years.

Spence had argued that Nixon was taking credit for accomplishments rightly due to the Republican-led Legislature.
