Kennett, MO (KAIT) - Kennett city council approved the social media guidelines earlier this week for all employees who work for the city.

The policy will reportedly not affect employees' personal pages.

"Just because they are employees of the city doesn't mean they give up their first amendment rights so if there's anything of public concern their free to express their opinions," said City Attorney, Terry McVey

Some of these guidelines include-

-Any comment or picture posted involving an employee, council member; patron or citizen must have the cities written consent to do so.

-Employees should not provide any confidential or private information

-Remarks made on the web should mention that the employees views are not necessarily the views of the city or other employees

"These guidelines can help prevent a hostile work environment and employees from sharing confidential information."
