CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The firearms deer season is underway in Missouri, and many hunters are giving back to the needy.

The Share the Harvest program, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation, provides a way for deer hunters to donate venison to the hungry.

Last year, more than 300,000 pounds of meat were donated.

Locally, donations were down a little bit after the opening weekend of firearm season.

Reis Meat Processing in Pocahontas says it had 39 deer donated last weekend.

Owner Revis Reisenbichler says while the number is a little low, it's not as bad as they thought it would be due to the warm weather.
