Spurrier receives two-year contract extension

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has received a two-year contract extension Monday afternoon during a meeting of the executive committee of the university's Board of Trustees.

The decision was unanimous.

Spurrier did not receive a pay raise. Spurrier and his assistants have their salaries assessed after the season and could receive a raise at a future Board of Trustees meeting after the season.

“We have had another tremendous year on the footballfield, winning 10 games for the second-straight year and for just the thirdtime in school history,” said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. “Our student-athletes arenot only having tremendous success on the field, but also in the classroom. CoachSpurrier continues to take our program to heights never before reached at SouthCarolina, as is well-deserving of this contract extension.”

“I appreciate the confidence the Board, the President andthe Athletics Director have shown by extending my contract,” said Coach Spurrier. “We have achieved a lot of goals but have not yet won the SECChampionship. Hopefully, we can do that within the next couple of years.”

Spurrier is scheduled to again earn $3.3 million in 2013.

A year ago, trustees gave Spurrier two additional years on the contractafter the football season, then voted him a raise of $475,000 this pastFebruary to his current salary.

Spurrier, with the 27-17 victory over Clemson, became the school’s all-time wins leader with 65 breaking Rex Enright’s mark of 64. Spurrier’s deal now extends through the 2017 season giving him five years on his contract.

South Carolina and Michigan will meet in the Outback Bowl on January 1, 2013 at 1 p.m.
