It's the one criminal offense that starts more innocently than any other: drinking and driving. Too often it is an unintended crime caused by a lapse in judgment, but a crime nonetheless. It can happen to anyone who decides to drink and drive.

You may say, "This wouldn't happen to me. I know when I've had too much to drink. It's my decision whether I get behind the wheel."

But, it's not just about you...others are impacted when you decide to drink and drive. It is holiday party season. If you're consuming alcohol, be reasonable and follow these simple tips:

• First, designate a sober driver and give them the keys
• If you don't have a driver, call someone to pick you up.
• Use those cell phones to report drunken drivers.
• If you know someone who has been drinking too much and plans to drive, take their keys and help get them home.
• Finally, if you are sober and are stopped at a sobriety checkpoint, thank the officers for their effort. They are working hard out there to keep us all safe.
