Cannon, of Simmons and Fletcher, will be one of two key panelists speaking and answering questions pertaining to representing dog bite victims during Strafford Legal Webinar’s upcoming Dog Bite Victim Representation Legal Webinar. The webinar provides 1.5 hours of continuing legal education credits to attorneys in participating states and is to take place on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST. This webinar will provide a guide for counsel confronting the special legal and representation challenges when representing dog bite victims.
According to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite over 4.7 million victims every year. Approximately 800,000 seek medical attention in the United States annually for dog bites. Of those, roughly half of them are children. 386,000 require treatment in an emergency room.
Dog bite laws vary from state-to-state making handling these cases tricky. This webinar will discuss handling cases involving strict liability claims, “one free bite rule” claims and leash law violations under City, County and State regulations. This webinar will also discuss how to investigate a dog bite case and gather evidence, traps and pitfalls a dog bite lawyer should avoid, dealing with insurance coverage issues and policy exclusions, tips on handling claims effectively and reaching creative settlement solutions to achieve client’s goals and more.
Paul H. Cannon is a Houston personal injury lawyer who has been representing dog bite victims for 17 years. He is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law. In a recent pit bull attack case, he used a punitive damages exclusion against the homeowner and the homeowner’s insurance company to force the homeowner to agree to no longer keep dangerous dogs on their property—making his client’s street safer for her to walk down.
Cannon will be joined by Todd Berkley, a Partner at the Law Offices of Edgar Snyder and Associates, of Pittsburgh. Berkley is a personal injury attorney who handles claims including dog bite cases.
