Board members at a central Illinois school are talking about arming and training a handful of their staff as auxiliary police, which would allow them to carry guns on campus.
The idea sparked a lot of talk here in the heartland.
We reached out to several school districts in Illinois and asked, is this something they would consider bringing to their school?
With answers on both sides of the fence, there was one common theme, in the wake of the sandy hook tragedy, it did make school administrators take a closer look at their own safety procedures, and ask themselves are they doing enough?
"There's one place where you want your kids to feel safe, and that's at school,"says Harrisburg Middle School Principal John Crabb. Parents trust teachers and trust administrators to provide that safety and that's why I said I would be in favor of any measure that would allow us or enable us to better protect our students," Harrisburg middle school has security cameras in place."
The school also locks all of their doors besides the office entrance when class begins.
Among responses from other school leaders, some felt it would be a good idea to train teachers, but to arm them might be giving them too much responsibility.
