CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
The political faithful from across Southeast Missouri gathered in Cape Girardeau to hear what the future will look like on Capital Hill.
The change comes about after Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson decided to step down from her seat representing the 8th Congressional District.
Her decision back in November opened the door for more than a dozen candidates vying to fill her seat.
The Southeast Missouri Pachyderm Club's committee will set the slate on who will represent the Republican side of the ticket during the upcoming special election later this year.
But, for many of the people gathered at the Concourse Building in downtown Cape Girardeau, they really wanted to hear what the candidates had to say.
"I want to hear something that distinguishes the candidates from each other. I want to hear whether they're actually going to get in and work, roll up their sleeves. And help change the direction our government is going in," said Richard Montgomery of Poplar Bluff.
"I want to hear if there's anything different from them that are already up there," said Bridget Lawson of Norwood. "Because I'm not happy with the way things are now. and how people are voting. So I want to see if there's a real difference, if they can really change things."
The candidates were allowed an opening statement, then they all were given the same six questions to answer. Then each one was given a chance to make a closing statement.
This political change for the 8th Congressional District of Southeast Missouri, will mark the first time in more than 30 years that an Emerson hasn't filled the seat on Capital Hill.
